enjoying all the things that inspire me

a new surrealism.

i have always loved collage, and recently stumbled across Hilary Faye’s work. There is something almost Dali like and surreal about it. it hints at an otherworldliness, a psychedelic magical mystery tour.

it inspired me to look for more artists who are doing similar work.

tim walker. the storyteller. one of my biggest inspirations and the man who can coax a smile out of the hardest of hearts. i have always loved his work. my fascination began when i was at art college flicking through the vogues, looking for research images for my moodboards. my next encounter with him was when i visited an exhibition at the Design Museum in 2008 called ‘Pictures’. i bought the book without hesitation, from then onwards it has been a source of inspiration. For the past 2 years i have been lucky enough to work for Mulberry where they are every bit as obsessed as me.

His imagination is unsurpassable. his sets theatrical. his sensibility mesmerising. whether it be looking through his books or visiting one of his exhibitions. you become lost in the magic of his world.

He brings the fairytale to life.

There is always a freshness about his work that always feels so modern. he loves unusual characters to play the part in his stories, he seems fascinated with unconventional beauty, whether it be from tim burton and helena bonham carter to lindsay wixson and lily cole.

His current exhibition ‘Story Teller’ is on at Somerset House.

Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?

Everyone must go and see the ‘William Klein and Daido Moriyama’ exhibition at the Tate Modern.

What excited me most about Klein’s work is how he takes one idea and pushes it in every direction. Whether the starting point is from a single photo, he creates beautiful works of art from enlarging the scale, using paint techniques or bringing it to life through film. He was a flaneur of his time, seeing things that other people would usually just walk by. An unseen recorder of events. His methods emphasized the interaction between the photographer and the subject, often almost pushing his camera with a wide angle lens into peoples faces.

Klein also made a number of films, his most famous one being ‘Qui-Etes Vous Polly Maggoo?’ (Who Are You Polly Magoo?) which satirises Vogue. It stars Dorothy Mc Gowan as supermodel Polly Magoo. It also stars Grayson Hall as  Miss Maxwell, a fashion magazine editor modeled after Diana Vreeland.
